Kolovesi is a National Park in the Sothern Savonlinna region. It was established in 1990 and covers 23 km2 (8.9 sq mi). It protects e.g. the habitat of the critically endangered Saimaa Ringed Seal. Typical of the rugged scenery of Kolovesi, formed by the ice-age craggy cliffs rising from the water. Cave paintings have been discovered in the area.
Kolovesi is an ideal place for canoeing or boating. The wilderness-like nature of Kolovesi National Park attracts lots of visitors in July-August. In the peak season it is not easy to find a tent site there. We recommend you to make your trip in the first weeks of June or in the last weeks of August. The visit in the colorful “ruskea” (brown) season in September-October would be also an unforgettable experience.
The 40 km circular canoeing route of Kolovesi takes 2 - 3 days. There are several campfire places in the National Park with camping sites. But there are also shorter routes and you may rent a boat or canoe at the local rental.
